Royal Lady Flashback: Dorothea von Salviati

Countess Dorothea von Salviati (1907-1972)
Wife of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, eldest grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The prince gave up his dynastic rights to make an "unequal marriage." The wedding was boycotted by all of his family except for one brother. The couple had two daughters, Felicitas and Christa, who were later recognized as princesses of the German imperial family. Dorothea was widowed in 1940 when Wilhelm died of injuries received in France while fighting for the Nazi German forces.

2016: Five Years with the Cambridges

"It is hard to believe that five years have already passed since the marriage of Prince William to his long-time live-in love Catherine (Kate) Middleton. It has been an eventful half decade for their family. Let's take a look back at the key moments:

2015: Second Born Royals

"Today, as we very eagerly await the second-born child of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, we are also celebrating the eighth birthday of Infanta Sofia, the second-born child of The King and Queen of Spain. In honor of these two second-borns, I thought we should take a look at the second-born children of this royal generation."

2011: Meet the Duchess of Cambridge

"This morning, it was announced that Catherine "Kate" Middleton will become Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Strathearn and Baroness Carrickfergus upon her marriage to HRH Prince William of Wales today. While there have been many Dukes of Cambridge, there have only been two Duchesses of Cambridge."

2013: End of the Queen Streak
"The world's longest period of female leadership will come to an end on April 30, 2013 when Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands voluntarily hands over her throne to her eldest son, Willem Alexander. She and her two immediate predecessors--her mother and grandmother--have kept the throne in female hands for nearly 123 years. In fact, before Willem Alexander's birth in 1964, no princes had been born in the Dutch royal house for more than a century. In other countries, this would have been a catastrophe that could have ended the monarchy. Not so in the more liberal Dutch nation."

“Today as we observe the 30th anniversary of the death of the woman who was born Bessie Wallis Warfield in Baltimore, Maryland, I am stunned to realize that I have never profiled her here on Princess Palace. Better known to history as Mrs. Simpson, she flew too close to the fire and earned a life of luxurious but perpetual exile.”

“Although strongly connected by family ties across most of the royal houses of Europe, Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1845-1912) likely never imagined how close she would come to a throne. Born into a non-reigning branch of the Hohenzollern dynasty that ruled Germany, Marie married the youngest brother of the Belgian King, while her sister married the King of Portugal and one brother was selected as the King of Romania. No such crowned fate seemed likely for Marie when Britain's Queen Victoria matched her with her own cousin Philippe Count of Flanders.”

2016: HER MAJESTY AT 90, DECADE BY DECADE
"Queen Elizabeth II reached her 90th birthday today, with her 94-year-old husband at her side. If her mother is any indication, Her Majesty still has more than a decade here with us... Now, I offer you a look into her life for each decade..."

2011: A NEW PRINCESS IS BORN
"Spring had not yet arrived on that drizzly, gray April morning in London. In a five-story Mayfair townhouse, the King’s only daughter-in-law was nestled in the familiar surroundings of her parents’ home. For the last three years, she and her husband had been living a nomadic existence migrating from one relative’s house to another waiting for the royal family to find them a comfortable, modern home with simple amenities like sufficient plumbing..."
