"The Princely palace in Monaco has announced that Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene is expecting her first child. Monaco has almost always had a fairly scandalous sovereign family. (Read my history of Princesses of Monaco.) The actual independence of Monaco was at stake through most of Albert's single days. Under the Monagesque constitution only the direct and legitimate heirs of the reigning prince could succeed. Furthermore, under international treaty, if Albert, had no legitimate children, Monaco would become part of France. By 2002, the situation had become serious enough they changed the constitution and had it ratified by France so that the reigning Prince's siblings and their legitimate descendants could accede, using male preference primogeniture." "While the line of succession to the British throne includes hundreds of people, succession in Denmark is limited to the descendants of King Christian X through approved marriage and therefore includes only 12 people. The lady at the end of that line is Queen Margrethe II's first cousin, Princess Elisabeth of Denmark (1935- ), who celebrated her 80th birthday on May 8. At the time of her birth, however, Elisabeth was not in the line of succession at all because women were barred. Her father, Prince Knud became the Hereditary Prince as heir to his brother, King Frederik IX when Frederik only had daughters. By 1953, the law was changed to allow women to inherit, pushing Knud down the line but allowing Elisabeth to finally enter the line, although after her younger brothers. "As the calendar inches closer and closer to the first week of June, that luminous date when, “experts” have predicted, Prince William and Kate Middleton will finally announce their engagement, wedding fever is likely to reach a frenzied pitch. Already newspapers, magazines and infotainment television are trying to fill their news holes with as much Kate-and-William trivia as they can dig up. For me, one of the most interesting is what Kate would be called. Technically, her late future mother-in-law never was “Princess Diana” although she was commonly referred to that way.As the wife of a prince who was not herself a princess, she always held the royal equivalent of “Mrs.” Instead of Mrs. Charles Mountbatten-Windsor, she was HRH The Princess Charles, The Princess of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duchess of Rothesay, etc., etc. After her divorce, she lost her royal status (the HRH part) and was styled plain old Diana, Princess of Wales—using of the title as a surname rather than as the title used by the wife of The Prince of Wales. The Princess Bridesmaid
Today's wedding between Philippa "Pippa" Middleton, sister of The Duchess of Cambridge, and James Matthews is not a royal wedding, but it does have many royal guests and two little royal attendants. While Pippa's nephew Prince George took up pageboy duties in light green pants, her niece two-year-old Princess Charlotte charmed in a traditional ivory dress with dusty pink sash and a crown of flowers.
